BACKPACKER MAGAZINE EDITOR'S CHOICE 2010: Kayland Contact Rev Review

A boot with mega support without the extra weight

Carrying a monster pack over monster terrain? You need rigid support and rock-solid stability. But you don’t need a clunky boot that’s anchor-heavy and uncomfortable when trail walking. What you want: the Contact Rev. “It never felt clompy despite thick soles and stiff collars,” reports one Colorado-based tester. “It protected my feet and ankles, but it has enough flex that I could hike fast when I dropped my pack to summit a spur peak on a Fourteener.” Credit a polyurethane midsole atop a lasting board that’s stiff in the heel and progressively more flexible toward the toe. That, combined with the weight-saving upper materials—suede and nylon, reinforced with abrasion-resistant microfiber—creates what one tester called a “springy feeling.” The high ankle kept another tester secure during a scramble—with a 50-pound pack—through an Adirondack blowdown. And the toothy tread never failed. “On a hike that included mud and ice, these boots held whether I was climbing over downed trees or up slick rocks,” says a New York tester. An eVent liner delivers waterproofing with top-notch breathability. Bonus: Zero break-in.

The Faction Collective - The Alias - Powder Magazine

2011 Faction The Alias Skis
Description: With 5/150mm of rocker in the tip and a 102mm waist, the Alias is the perfect freeride ski. Rocker and reduced camber let us create a semi-stiff ski that floats incredibly well, reduces the running length and makes the ski easier to control on hardpack and firm snow.

The Faction Collective - Thirteen Ski - Powder magazine

2011 Faction The Thirteen Skis
Description: Unchanged from 2009-10, the Thirteen retains its crown as the stiffest, straightest high-performance big mountain ski on the market: 8/300mm rocker in the tip; 112mm waist and a massive 46m radius sidecut; flat camber through the rest of the ski. Amazing float and stability at speed when straightlining is your thing.

2011 Faction The Royale Skis
Description: The Royale became our most popular ski last winter. Dual 15/300mm rocker front and rear, and 122mm waist for maximum versatility and float for skiing normal and switch. Semi-stiff flex lets you retain control in all conditions—surprisingly damp and stable at speed. Mount center for BC freestyle, normal for all-mountain powder.
Skier’s Choice Draft Pick | Round 1, 1st Pick by Caroline Schou
The best powder ski I rode all last winter. Dropping into waist-deep blower, the tip and tail rocker allows you to not only float but bounce around in the powder–they are super playful. The Royale (in my preferred length of 183cm) is also easily maneuverable in the tight but often tracked-up trees of Jackson’s Rock Springs Bowl, and lets you send it straight through the narrower spots.

The Royale - Powder Magazine 1st pick, powder section, 2010 Buyers Guide Fantasy Draft.
